While I am not an autograph seeker, I never turned down the opportunity if some celebrity was signing stuff. I have also received a few as gifts.

On October 4th, 1988, my father attended a fundraiser called the “Great Sports Legends Dinner” at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City and got me a few autographs. My most prized possession is the autograph of the “Greatest of All Time”, Muhammad Ali. I was a big fan of heavyweight boxing in the 1970’s and 1980’s. By the way, I highly recommend visiting the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, KY. You can find it, and my review, here.

As a lifelong, genetically programmed Yankees fan, this is one of my favorites. Billy Martin had been fired for the last time six months earlier and died in a car accident a year later.

Also at the dinner and providing an autograph was tennis great Billie Jean King. I have always admired her as a forerunner in women’s sports and still remember the hoopla leading up to the match between her and Bobby Riggs in 1973. The match was later documented in the film Battle of the Sexes.
